ElevenLabs and Murf solve the same problem from different directions: ElevenLabs is a voice-model company with a creator studio on top, while Murf is a voiceover studio for people who want to type a script, pick a voice and export. We compared their official pricing pages, help centers and docs, plus YouTube’s policy pages. We have not tested them hands-on yet.

Pricing and what you actually get
ElevenLabs plans
ElevenLabs sells credits; its pricing table maps roughly 1k credits to one minute of text-to-speech.
- Free: $0, 10k credits/month (~10 min). Personal use only.
- Starter: $6/month, 30k credits (~30 min). Adds the commercial license, Instant Voice Cloning and 20 Studio projects. Until October 18 there’s a promo making the first month $1.
- Creator: $22/month, 121k credits (~121 min). Adds Professional Voice Cloning and the option to buy extra usage. First month is currently 50% off ($11).
- Pro: $99/month, 600k credits (~600 min), 192 kbps audio and 44.1 kHz PCM output via API.
- Scale: $299/month, 1.8M credits (~1,800 min), 3 seats.
- Business: $990/month, 6M credits (~6,000 min), 10 seats.
Extra minutes are listed at roughly $0.36 (Free) down to about $0.17 (Pro and up). ElevenLabs offers yearly billing via a toggle, but we couldn’t confirm the yearly prices, so check current pricing before you commit.
Murf plans
Murf sells Voice Generation Time (VGT), measured in hours.
- Free: $0, 10 minutes of voice generation, 10 projects, 1 editor. The free trial does not support downloads, so you can’t publish from it.
- Creator: $29/month, or $19/month billed yearly ($228/year). 2 hours/month (24 hours/year on annual), 100 projects, 1 editor seat, commercial rights.
- Business: $99/month, or $66/month billed yearly ($792/year). 8 hours/month (96 hours/year on annual), 500 projects, adds the Business License, emphasis and “Say It My Way” controls, 48 hours of transcription.
- Enterprise: custom pricing, unlimited voice generation, more seats, broadcasting rights as an add-on.
Unused Murf VGT carries forward one billing cycle on active or paused plans, and is lost if you cancel.
What it costs at realistic YouTube volumes
A 10-minute voiceover is roughly 1,500 words, or around 9,000 characters.
- One 10-minute video a week (~40 min/month): ElevenLabs Starter (30 min) is too tight, so you land on Creator at $22. Murf Creator covers it with room to spare at $29 monthly or $19 yearly. Close to a tie on price.
- Daily 10-minute videos (~300 min/month): ElevenLabs Creator plus paid overage, or Pro at $99 for ~600 min. Murf needs Business at $99 monthly ($66 yearly) for 8 hours. Murf’s annual Business plan is the cheaper fixed option here.
- Shorts only (a few minutes a week): ElevenLabs Starter at $6 is the cheapest legal-for-commercial-use option of the two.
Re-generating lines uses allowance on both tools, so budget 20 to 30% above finished runtime.
Commercial-use rights on each plan
A monetized channel is commercial use, so this matters.
ElevenLabs: The free plan has no commercial license. If you publish free-plan audio at all, ElevenLabs requires you to credit “elevenlabs.io” or “11.ai” in the title. Every paid plan includes a commercial license (Beta features excepted). Audio created while you were on a paid plan can be used commercially indefinitely, subject to their service-specific terms. Audio made before or after a paid subscription can’t.
Murf: All paid plans include commercial rights over Studio voiceovers, and Murf’s help center says those rights stay valid after you cancel. Murf explicitly says YouTube voiceovers can be monetized, as long as the script is original and not under a copyright dispute. Two fine-print items:
- Murf directs registered businesses and organizations to its Business License, which starts on the Business plan. If your channel is run through an LLC or company, check with Murf whether Creator is enough for you.
- Broadcasting rights (TV networks, commercial radio) are Enterprise-only. That doesn’t affect YouTube.
Voice cloning rules and consent
ElevenLabs has two cloning tiers:
- Instant Voice Cloning (Starter and up): ElevenLabs recommends about 1 to 2 minutes of clean audio and advises against going past 3 minutes. Before saving, you must confirm you have the right and consent to clone the voice. ElevenLabs says all generated audio can be traced back to the account that made it.
- Professional Voice Cloning (Creator and up): a higher-fidelity clone trained on more audio. It is limited to your own voice, even if someone else consents. You have to pass a verification step where you read on-screen text aloud. If a collaborator wants their voice used, they create and verify the clone on their own account and share it with you privately.
Murf voice cloning is not self-serve. Murf’s help center says it is available only on the Enterprise plan, and you request it through a form or sales. Murf’s public help pages we read don’t spell out the consent process, so ask their team directly if you go that route.
If cloning your own voice is why you’re shopping, ElevenLabs is the practical choice.
Languages and voices
ElevenLabs’ plan table lists 74 languages on every tier, its Eleven v4 page advertises 90+, and it cites a library of 17,500+ voices. Murf’s catalog is smaller and its own pages cite different counts, so check the current voice and language list; it includes several English variants.
For dubbing a channel into many languages, ElevenLabs covers far more ground. For English-first channels that want a curated set of narrator voices, Murf’s smaller catalog is easier to browse.
Editing workflow
ElevenLabs offers a quick text-to-speech box plus a Studio for long-form projects (3 projects on Free, 20 on Starter). The v4 model accepts direction tags in the script, like [whispers] or [laughs], and a pronunciation dictionary handles names and jargon. Powerful, but it rewards experimenting.
Murf is a voiceover editor: split the script into blocks, set pitch, speed and pauses, and line audio up against video or images. Business adds emphasis, variability and “Say It My Way” (guide delivery with your own read). Paid plans include royalty-free stock media and a Canva add-on.
If you edit in Premiere, DaVinci or CapCut anyway, either tool is just “export, drop on timeline”. For a simple narrated slideshow without another editor, Murf gets you closer to a finished video.
API access
- ElevenLabs uses one account for app and API. Its API pricing page lists text-to-speech at $0.08 per 1K characters for v4, v3 and Multilingual v2, and $0.04 per 1K for Flash/Turbo models. Official TypeScript and Python SDKs are available.
- Murf prices its API separately from Studio. The free trial includes $10 of API credit and 5 concurrent requests. Pay-as-you-go is listed at $0.01 per 1K characters for its Falcon model and $0.03 per 1K for the studio-quality Gen2 voices, and purchased credit never expires.
On list price, Murf’s API is cheaper per character; compare voice quality before deciding on cost.
YouTube monetization: what actually matters
Disclosure of altered or synthetic content
YouTube asks creators to turn on the “AI use” disclosure in YouTube Studio when realistic content is made or altered with AI, for example making a real person appear to say something they didn’t, or generating a realistic event that never happened. A cloned voice of a real person saying things they never said falls squarely here.
YouTube’s help page says disclosure is not required for production help (scripts, titles, thumbnails), clearly unrealistic content, or cloning your own voice for voiceovers or dubs. YouTube also says disclosing doesn’t limit reach or affect monetization eligibility, while repeatedly failing to disclose can lead to penalties including removal from the YouTube Partner Program.
Inauthentic and reused content
In July 2025 YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy to inauthentic content. Mass-produced or templated videos, including AI-generated content made from generic templates, are not eligible for monetization. Separately, the reused content policy excludes videos that only read out material you didn’t write, such as text pulled from websites or news feeds.
In practice, an AI voice reading your own original, researched script is fine. An AI voice reading scraped articles over stock footage, 30 times a week, is what YouTube targets, whichever tool you use.
Who should NOT buy each tool
- Not ElevenLabs if you want a fixed bill without thinking about credits, or dislike open-ended “direct the voice” tools.
- Not Murf if you want self-serve voice cloning, dozens of languages, or more than 8 hours/month without talking to sales.
Alternatives worth a look
- Descript: if you record yourself and mostly want to fix mistakes, its text-based editor and voice features may replace a separate TTS tool.
- WellSaid: a business-focused TTS studio aimed more at training and marketing teams than solo YouTubers.
We haven’t compared these in detail; check current pricing.
How we researched this
In October 2026 we read the official ElevenLabs and Murf pricing pages, help centers and docs, and YouTube’s policy pages on AI disclosure and monetization. All prices and limits come from those pages. We have not tested either tool hands-on: we haven’t judged voice quality, render speed or editor bugs, and we’ll add free-plan screenshots soon. Promotions change often, so confirm before you buy.

FAQ
Can I monetize YouTube videos made with ElevenLabs or Murf? Yes, on a paid plan. Both include commercial rights on paid tiers. ElevenLabs’ free plan is non-commercial and requires attribution, and Murf’s free trial doesn’t allow downloads. Your content also has to meet YouTube’s inauthentic and reused content rules.
Do I have to label AI voiceovers on YouTube? Not for every AI voice. YouTube requires disclosure for realistic altered or synthetic content, such as making a real person appear to say something. Its help page lists cloning your own voice for voiceovers as not requiring disclosure. When in doubt, disclose; YouTube says it doesn’t hurt monetization.
Which is cheaper for one video a week? About even. ElevenLabs Creator is $22/month for ~121 minutes; Murf Creator is $29/month (or $19/month yearly) for 2 hours. ElevenLabs Starter at $6 only works if your weekly videos are very short.
Can I clone my voice on Murf? Only on the Enterprise plan, and it isn’t self-serve. On ElevenLabs, Instant Voice Cloning starts on Starter and Professional Voice Cloning on Creator.
Can I clone a celebrity or a friend’s voice? Don’t. ElevenLabs requires confirmed rights and consent, and Professional clones are limited to your own verified voice.
Do I keep commercial rights if I cancel? Both say content created during a paid subscription stays usable commercially after you cancel.
