If you work from cafés, coworking spaces or hotels, a VPN is one of the cheapest parts of your security setup. But VPN marketing overpromises, and Proton VPN, NordVPN and Surfshark differ in ways that matter for a one-person business: dedicated IPs, device limits, free plans and what you pay after the first term.
We compared the official pricing pages, audit announcements and support docs for all three.
What a VPN does (and doesn’t) do for a freelancer
Let’s get this out of the way first, because it shapes everything else.
A VPN does:
- Encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server, so the person running the café Wi-Fi (or someone snooping on it) can’t see which sites you visit or tamper with unencrypted traffic.
- Hide your real IP address from the sites you connect to.
- Let you appear to be in another country, which helps when you travel and need to reach services that behave differently by region.
A VPN does not:
- Stop phishing emails, malware, or a fake login page from stealing your password.
- Protect your client files if your laptop is stolen, your cloud account is breached, or you email the wrong person.
- Make you anonymous. You’re shifting trust from your ISP or the Wi-Fi owner to the VPN company. If you log in to Google, Slack or a client portal, those services still know it’s you.
- Replace HTTPS. Most sites already encrypt your connection. A VPN adds a layer on networks you don’t trust, it isn’t the only thing between you and an attacker.
For client confidentiality, the bigger wins are full-disk encryption, a password manager, two-factor authentication and OS updates. Also read client contracts: some require a VPN, some require their VPN, and some forbid consumer VPNs on their systems.

The freelancer use cases, one by one
Public Wi-Fi and coworking spaces
All three encrypt your traffic on untrusted networks, and for this job they’re effectively interchangeable. Practical tip: turn on auto-connect for untrusted networks so you don’t have to remember to tap a button.
Dedicated IPs (client allowlists, fewer CAPTCHAs)
This is the biggest functional difference. Normal VPN servers share one IP among many users, which is good for privacy but causes two headaches: clients who only allow approved IPs into a CMS, staging server or remote desktop can’t allowlist you, and banks, payment processors and marketplaces may flag shared VPN IPs with extra CAPTCHAs or checks. A dedicated IP is an address only you use.
- NordVPN sells a dedicated IP as an add-on to any plan. Its dedicated IP page lists locations including 11 US cities (Ashburn, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Seattle), three in Canada, three in the UK, and many more across Europe and Asia Pacific. The price isn’t shown on the feature page; NordVPN says it depends on plan length, so check at checkout.
- Surfshark sells a dedicated IP add-on “from $3.75 per month” on all plans, in 17 locations across 13 countries (including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Australia).
- Proton VPN offers dedicated IPs only through its business plans. Its business pricing page lists VPN Professional at $9.99 per user/month (billed yearly, 2-user minimum) with dedicated servers included, but the annual total shown on that page is higher than the per-user math, so confirm the real cost with Proton before budgeting. For a solo freelancer, that’s a lot more than a consumer add-on.
Bottom line: if a client needs to allowlist your IP, NordVPN or Surfshark is the simpler route. NordVPN has more US city options; Surfshark has a published starting price.
Number of devices
Proton VPN and NordVPN allow 10 simultaneous connections, plenty for most solo workers. Surfshark advertises unlimited devices, a real advantage if you share with a household or run several test devices for client work.
Travel and working abroad
All three let you connect to servers in many countries, which helps when you’re abroad and need a home-country IP to reach your bank, your accounting software or a client portal that geo-blocks foreign logins.
Caveats: some services block VPN IPs (a home-country dedicated IP often works better for banking), and VPN use is restricted in some countries, so check local rules before you travel.
Free plans
Only Proton VPN has a free plan. According to Proton’s official pages, Proton Free gives you one device at a time, servers in a limited set of countries chosen for you (the pricing page lists 10 countries, randomly selected), no data cap and no ads. The pricing page describes free-plan speed as “medium.”
For a freelancer, Proton Free is a solid backup for occasional café work or for testing the app before paying. It’s not a good fit if you need to pick a specific country or protect more than one device at once.
NordVPN and Surfshark have no free tier, but both offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, as does Proton on paid plans.
No-logs audits: who checked, and when
“No-logs” is a promise. An audit is a third party checking that promise at a point in time. None of these audits proves a provider will never log in the future, but recent, repeated audits are a meaningful signal.
- Proton VPN: Audited by Securitum, a European security auditing firm, every year from 2022 through 2026 (five consecutive audits). Proton says the 2026 report found no evidence that the examined servers log browsing activity, DNS queries, traffic contents or user-identifiable connection metadata. Proton links the reports from its blog.
- NordVPN: Its sixth independent no-logs assurance engagement was performed by Deloitte Lithuania under the ISAE 3000 (Revised) standard, running November 10 to December 12, 2025. The previous (fifth) engagement was also by Deloitte, with access from November 18 to December 20, 2024, published February 18, 2025. Earlier assessments took place in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023. The full report is available to customers inside their Nord Account.
- Surfshark: Verified by Deloitte, first published January 25, 2023, with a re-verification announced June 16, 2025. Surfshark says the latest assurance covered its standard, static and multiport servers. The ISAE 3000 report is available to customers in their account.
Proton and NordVPN have the more frequent audit cadence.
Jurisdiction: does it matter?
Where a VPN company is based affects which legal requests it must answer. A no-logs setup limits what it could hand over, but jurisdiction is still worth knowing.
- Proton VPN is Swiss-based, with its registered address in Geneva. Switzerland is outside the EU and has its own privacy laws.
- NordVPN lists a mailing address in Panama City, Panama. Its parent brand is Nord Security.
- Surfshark is operated by Surfshark B.V. with an address in Amsterdam, Netherlands (an EU country).
Also note: Nord Security and Surfshark agreed to merge in 2022, though the two VPNs continue as separate services.
Pricing: the renewal trap
All three advertise their lowest price on the longest plan, and that price only applies to the first term. Here’s what that looks like in practice, using the official figures we found:
- Proton VPN Plus: $83.76 for the first 24 months, then $83.88 every 12 months. That’s roughly $167.64 for three years, and the renewal price is basically the same yearly rate as the intro deal.
- NordVPN Basic: $94.23 for the first 27 months, then $139.08 per year. About $233.31 for the first 39 months, and every year after that costs $139.08.
- Surfshark Starter: $67.23 for the first 27 months. Surfshark’s pricing page and renewal terms say the plan renews “at full price,” but the renewal amount wasn’t shown as a number on the pages we could access. Check your renewal price in the order summary before paying. Note that Surfshark’s FAQ says the 2-year plan renews annually after it expires.
Tip: set a calendar reminder a week before renewal.
Who should pick which
Proton VPN: for predictable long-term pricing, a Swiss company, yearly audits and a free plan. Not for a dedicated IP on a solo budget.
NordVPN: for a client-allowlisted dedicated IP with many US city options. Not if renewal costs bother you ($139.08/year for Basic).
Surfshark: for many devices, the cheapest first term and a dedicated IP from $3.75/month. Not if you want the renewal price confirmed before checkout.
None of them if you expect a VPN alone to make client data secure. Start with disk encryption, a password manager and 2FA.
How we researched this
In October 2026 we read the official pricing pages, no-logs audit announcements, dedicated IP pages, free-plan pages and business pricing pages for Proton VPN, NordVPN and Surfshark (links below). We did not run speed tests, streaming tests, or hands-on app testing for this article, and we didn’t independently review the audit reports themselves; audit details come from each provider’s own summary. Where a price wasn’t shown on an official page we could access, we say “check current pricing” instead of guessing. Screenshots will be added from free plans and trials.

FAQ
Do freelancers really need a VPN? If you regularly work on public or shared Wi-Fi, a VPN is a cheap, sensible layer. If you work only from your home network, it’s less critical than 2FA, a password manager and disk encryption.
Will a VPN keep my client’s data confidential? Only partly. It protects data in transit on networks you don’t control. It does nothing for files on a stolen laptop, a compromised email account, or a phishing link you click.
Is Proton VPN’s free plan enough for work? For occasional use on one device, yes. You can’t choose a specific country, and the pricing page describes its speed as “medium,” so it’s a backup rather than a daily driver for most freelancers.
What’s a dedicated IP and do I need one? It’s an IP address only you use. You need one if a client allowlists IPs for access, or if banks and platforms keep flagging your shared VPN IP. Otherwise, a shared IP is better for privacy.
Which VPN is cheapest long term? Based on published renewal prices, Proton VPN Plus ($83.88/year after the first term) is lower than NordVPN Basic ($139.08/year). Surfshark’s renewal price wasn’t listed as a number on its pricing page, so compare it at checkout.
